From a Smoky Summer to the Fancy Need for Change |
It’s been a difficult summer with frequent ride cancellations due to storms and poor air quality. Our hearts go out to all those affected more seriously by the wildfires. If you’d like to help, Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is currently accepting donations. The most needed items are new toiletries and diapers.
Donations can be delivered to:
25 Ray Marius Road
Open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM
MMF also has a donation page for those who wish to contribute financially. Every donation makes a difference during this challenging time.
Personally, I’m trying to ride my bike as much as possible, both despite and because of the fires. As someone without asthma, I recognize my privilege in being able to endure the smoke with goggles and masks. Each day the air quality forces me indoors, I’m reminded of our urgent need for better alternatives to driving: more protected infrastructure, improved transit, increased housing, and other sustainable solutions.
I imagine many of you feel similarly, which is why I’m inviting you to join members of our cycling community at City Hall this Thursday, July 17. As you may know, there’s been significant advocacy for the Wellington Crescent protected bike lane (Academy/Maryland to Stradbrook). This designated bike route sees heavy use by cyclists and pedestrians but remains dangerously wide, with speeding traffic.
Despite the bike lane pilot project design being ready since February, the City has announced another 220-day delay, citing further consultation with property owners. Wendy, Rob Jenner’s wife, and others, will be speaking at Thursday’s meeting, and we’d like to support her by filling the gallery in the City Council Chambers between 9:30 and approximately 11:30 AM. If you’re available, your presence would be greatly appreciated. Wearing red (Rob’s favourite colour) would be an added bonus.
It’s crucial that we continue demonstrating to our councillors and mayor that our safety isn’t something we’re willing to compromise on.
The next big event this weekend is the Fancy Women’s Ride, a free group ride happening this Sunday, July 20 at 2 PM. I really hope it doesn’t get cancelled again, but keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook for updates regarding weather and air quality.
The route has been modified due to events at Assiniboine Park, but freezies and fun are still on the menu! I hope to see you there!
When: Sunday, July 20 at 2 PM
Where: Fountain behind the Legislative Building, on Assiniboine Ave
Wear your prettiest dress—or don’t—but bring your fanciest smile and your fanciest friends! Ok, your friends don’t have to be the fanciest, or women, but your smile does!
