Markus Chambers – St. Norbert-Seine River 2018

Quotes from candidate’s websIte regarding cycling, active transportation and public transit include:

  • “will work with Transit Planners to host a series of open houses to discuss with residents existing routes, ridership and potential new routes to improve transit services in the community”.
  • It is vital that we ensure our bike paths allow cyclists to travel from south Winnipeg into downtown and throughout the city in a manner which protects both cyclists and motorists on the road.  Work on the City’s bike lanes is done in conjunction with road renewal and other major projects.  I will work in partnership with city departments to ensure our neighbourhood and connecting streets have more protected bike lanes to encourage more people to cycle.
  • timely and effective snow clearing of streets, sidewalks and lanes and speed zones on community streets. Residents have stated that snow filled walking paths are a threat to school age children’s safety and result in isolation for our seniors.

From Vote Winnipeg 2018 (Winnipeg Free Press) accessed 18 Oct 2018:

Q: “What is your position on reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians?” “I want all the information as to why Portage and Main should be reopen or remain closed. I believe there is information the public still needs to make an informed decision and not an emotional decision.”

Q: “What should Winnipeg’s plan be for the future of public and active transit?” “Winnipeg Transit must undergo a transformation to increase the public’s confidence in safety and scheduling. Drivers safety must also be addressed and increased as much as possible. A lot of the issues are related to fare collection, so we have to revisit how that is done. Additionally, the 50/50 cost sharing model with the province needs to be restored. Increasing ridership in public transit will take cars off the roadways opening opportunities for cyclists to share roadways as commuters.”

From Winnipeg Votes 2018 (CBC) accessed 18 Oct 2018:

Q: “How would you improve public transit service for people in the St. Norbert-Seine River ward?” “There’s a couple of strategies that I have in mind. They include increasing frequency of routes and to reach into the communities where transit currently doesn’t drive all the way to. I was talking to some university students who identified this as a real problem. A lot of times, they’re taking buses that will take them to St. Vital Centre, [and] they’re waiting there for lengthy periods of time before they can catch a connection which then takes them to the University of Manitoba. So, seemingly, driving an eight-kilometre distance is taking an hour and 45 minutes, which is unacceptable.

The candidate completed the 2018 all-candidate environmental survey: A coalition of Winnipeg Environmental Organizations compiled questions for an all-candidate (Mayoral and Councilor) survey with questions relating to the environment, including AT.
