Bikeshare Service Researcher

Bike Winnipeg is a non-profit, member-based organization working to make cycling in Winnipeg a safe, enjoyable, accessible, and convenient transportation choice year round.

We are seeking a passionate individual in Canada for the position of Bikeshare Service Researcher (Recreational Activities Consultant) to assist with our Bikeshare Development Project, who supports the mission and vision of Bike Winnipeg and other social-purpose cycling organizations in Canada, and who is committed to active transportation.

Term

This position is for 280 hours starting January 4th until February 28th.

Location

This position can be completed remotely from anywhere in Canada.

Mandatory Qualifications

From a combination of formal education and related experience, you must have research and report writing experience.  You must also:

  • Be between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

In general, you will be responsible for researching bikeshare and bikeswap services around the world.  This includes:

  • Operating structure (for-profit, social enterprise, etc.)
  • Relationship with local transit agency(ies) and all levels of government
  • Funding/financing sources
  • User fee structures
  • Reasons for failures and successes
  • Creating a survey to be distributed to bikeshare service providers
  • Infrastructure details (docked/dockless, e-assist/full electric/no assist, bike manufacturer, accessories provided, weight limit, GPS use, etc.)
  • Ridership details including seasonal variation, geographic coverage, fleet rebalancing, etc.
  • Maintenance and repair experience
  • Public and political opinions
  • Noteworthy bikeshares and bikeswaps in other countries, a focus on North American bikeshares, and a comprehensive review of Canadian bikeshares/bikeswaps
  • Anti-theft and anti-vandalism strategies
  • Local research and general research
  • Other tasks as assigned

You are expected to provide your own cell phone and laptop.  All work can be completed remotely from your home office from anywhere in Canada.

Transportation Survey Researcher

We are seeking a passionate individual in Canada for the position of Transportation Survey Researcher (Recreational Activities Consultant) to assist with our Bikeshare Development Project, who supports the mission and vision of Bike Winnipeg and other social-purpose cycling organizations in Canada, and who is committed to active transportation.

Term

This position is for 280 hours starting January 4th until February 28th.

Location

This position will involve a mix of remote and in-person work in Winnipeg as permitted by public health orders.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

In general, duties and responsibilities include any tasks or activities that support the development and delivery of a bike access participation survey about bicycle ownership and the development of a bikeshare service for residents, workers, and visitors. Tasks include:

  • Create and deliver a participant survey with relevant ethical and privacy considerations
  • Establishing a baseline measurement for GHG emissions, life expectancy, physical activity, financial health, and opinions before and after a bike access program
  • Participant survey preparation including ethics, privacy considerations, and evaluation
  • Researching various impact measurement frameworks (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals) and performance indicators for impacts to climate, pandemic preparedness, municipal budgets, personal health and well-being, neighbourhoods, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned
